Araya

Time: 7:30PM
Contact Info: 530-898-4642
University Film Series @ the Little Theater presents: "Araya" (1959, Venezuela) 90 min. Directed by Margot Benacerraf. A Milestone Film release. Introduced by Sarah Pike, Religious Studies and Humanities Center Richard Brody in The New Yorker writes: “This majestic documentary portrait of 1959— of several families on Venezuela’s vast and arid salt-marsh peninsula—is the only feature film by its director, Margot Benacerraf. Its arresting fi rst images of sea and sky evoke a vast historical arc in which her modern-day subjects—mainly, a seemingly timeless horde of salt miners on their rugged and monotonous rounds—gradually emerge from teeming anonymity. The Pereda family, like others in the area, exerts itself mightily to build a literal pyramid of salt, only to break it down into sacks of salt for sale. At the nearby sand beach, the Ortiz family, which survives through fishing, carefully calculates what they must consume and what they can afford to sell. Benacerraf’s grandiose style captures the drama of subsistence in the face of glorious but indifferent nature; the overwhelming beauty of the wide-open spaces contrasts with the workers’ long and burdened trudges through them. Following her characters into their villages and their homes, the director offers a wealth of touching details but little intimacy and few ideas, avoiding with equal discretion both the subjects’ inner lives and all wider political context—though the last sequence, showing the inroads of industrialization, makes a viewer wonder what’s going on in Araya today.” $3 donation appreciated

Comedy, "Lysistrata" will be held on Wed., March 3–Sat., March 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sun., March 7 at 2 p.m. at the Harlen Adams Theatre. Original play by Aristophanes Directed by Gail Holbrook Musical Direction by Joel P. Rogers Lysistrata was originally written by Aristophanes who is sometimes referred to as Ancient Greece’s Mel Brooks. In 2500 years, a few things have not changed: our conflicting feelings about war, our need for sex and the power struggle in both those areas. The dilemma is ageless and the solution is hilarious: the women of Athens decide to withhold sex (and money) until the men declare a truce with Sparta. This new adaptation still provides the rude, crude and lewd jokes but the music and dialogue are contemporary. ADVANCE TICKETS: $15 Adult, $13 Senior, $6 Student/Child; available at the University Box Office, corner of 2nd Street and Normal Ave. (530.898.6333).

Peter DiFalco, Technology and Learning Program (TLP) “Memory and Electronic Media” Humanities Center Tertulia, 3–4:30 PM, Trinity 100 and 126 Peter DiFalco talks about the fragility and intelligibility of electronically archived information. He writes, “We are confronted with the challenge of both preserving the physical properties of the media and the capability of understanding the way that information has been encoded on the medium itself. My reference points are the recent recovery of original NASA data tapes of the ‘earthrise’ photography, preservation of cinematic works, and our own increasingly digitized memorabilia and documents—to which I may now add a discussion of ‘cloud’ computing spurred by the recent loss of an entire generation of social cell phone data (T-Mobile’s ‘Sidekick’ disaster).”

University Film Series Presents: Water (2005, India/Canada) 117 min. Directed and written by Deepa Mehta. Introduced by Jason Clower, Religious Studies and Humanities Center. Sponsored by the Humanities Student Society. Academy Award nominated. Set in Varanasi, India, 1938, during the period of the British Raj. Following Hindu tradition, the marriage of young girls to older men was commonplace. When a man hailing from an orthodox Hindu family died, his young widow would be forced to spend the rest of her life in an institution for widows called a widow’s ashram in order to make amends for the sins from her previous life, which supposedly caused her husband’s death. The film is the third part of a linked trilogy by Mehta, Fire (1996) and Earth (1998)

University Film Series presents: Goodbye Dragon Inn (Bu San) (2003, Taiwan) 82 min. Directed by Ming-liang Tsai. Introduced by Wai-hung Wong,Philosophy and Humanities Center. Set in the approximately ninety minutes of the last feature at an old and grand Taipei cinema that is closing down, showing King Hu’s 1967 sword-fighting classic Dragon Inn. Only a few people are present in the cinema, and a variety of subplots are developed around them. Throughout the film, the ticket woman tries to fi nd the projectionist searching for him in order to present him with a steamed bun, yet they never meet. A young hustler wanders around the cinema in search of a homosexual encounter. A Japanese man tells him that the cinema is haunted, and there seems to be a certain amount of truth in that. An old man, who was one of the actors who appeared in the original Dragon Inn, watches the film with tears in his eyes. Outside the theatre he encounters an older man who had been watching the film with his grandson; this man also starred in the original film.
