A man of faith succumbs to a temptation he cannot resist. Johan (Cornelio Wall Fehr) and Esther (Miriam Toews) have been married for years and live with the children in a Mennonite community in northern Mexico. While Johan and Esther are both taciturn by nature, a moral delimma is tearing Johan apart--he's been having an affair with another woman in their circle, Marianne (Maria Pankratz), and feels he may be falling in love with her. While the tenets of his faith strictly forbid adultery, his need to be with Marianne seems stronger than his moral compass...after Johan confesses to his father about his lust for Marianne, he's told that he may have fallen under the sway of Satan. University Film Series @ the Little Theater presents: "Araya" (1959, Venezuela) 90 min. Directed by Margot Benacerraf. A Milestone Film release. Introduced by Sarah Pike, Religious Studies and Humanities Center Richard Brody in The New Yorker writes: “This majestic documentary portrait of 1959— of several families on Venezuela’s vast and arid salt-marsh peninsula—is the only feature film by its director, Margot Benacerraf. Its arresting fi rst images of sea and sky evoke a vast historical arc in which her modern-day subjects—mainly, a seemingly timeless horde of salt miners on their rugged and monotonous rounds—gradually emerge from teeming anonymity. The Pereda family, like others in the area, exerts itself mightily to build a literal pyramid of salt, only to break it down into sacks of salt for sale. At the nearby sand beach, the Ortiz family, which survives through fishing, carefully calculates what they must consume and what they can afford to sell. Benacerraf’s grandiose style captures the drama of subsistence in the face of glorious but indifferent nature; the overwhelming beauty of the wide-open spaces contrasts with the workers’ long and burdened trudges through them. Following her characters into their villages and their homes, the director offers a wealth of touching details but little intimacy and few ideas, avoiding with equal discretion both the subjects’ inner lives and all wider political context—though the last sequence, showing the inroads of industrialization, makes a viewer wonder what’s going on in Araya today.” $3 donation appreciated

Comedy, "Lysistrata" will be held on Wed., March 3–Sat., March 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sun., March 7 at 2 p.m. at the Harlen Adams Theatre. Original play by Aristophanes Directed by Gail Holbrook Musical Direction by Joel P. Rogers Lysistrata was originally written by Aristophanes who is sometimes referred to as Ancient Greece’s Mel Brooks. In 2500 years, a few things have not changed: our conflicting feelings about war, our need for sex and the power struggle in both those areas. The dilemma is ageless and the solution is hilarious: the women of Athens decide to withhold sex (and money) until the men declare a truce with Sparta. This new adaptation still provides the rude, crude and lewd jokes but the music and dialogue are contemporary. ADVANCE TICKETS: $15 Adult, $13 Senior, $6 Student/Child; available at the University Box Office, corner of 2nd Street and Normal Ave. (530.898.6333).

He writes, “We are confronted with the challenge of both preserving the physical properties of the media and the capability of understanding the way that information has been encoded on the medium itself. My reference points are the recent recovery of original NASA data tapes of the ‘earthrise’ photography, preservation of cinematic works, and our own increasingly digitized memorabilia and documents—to which I may now add a discussion of ‘cloud’ computing spurred by the recent loss of an entire generation of social cell phone data (T-Mobile’s ‘Sidekick’ disaster).”

Appearing on stage with a stool, a microphone and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula Poundstone is famous for her razor-sharp wit and spontaneity. A mainstay on NPR’s quirky weekly news program Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me, Poundstone is a master of improvisation and audience interaction, so much so that audience members at her live shows often think the random people she responds to are “plants” (they’re not!). Relay For Life®, the American Cancer Society's signature event, is a fun-filled overnight experience designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer. At Relay, people from within the community gather to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer, and to fight back against this disease. Relay participants help raise money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society in its lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health issue. During Relay For Life ® events, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. The events are held overnight to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps. Through the survivors' lap and the luminaria ceremony, we honor the people who have faced cancer first hand, and we remember those who have been lost to this disease. But, Relay isn't about taking laps -- it's about coming together in the fight against cancer. It’s a time to remember those lost to this disease and celebrate those who have survived. It’s a place where people connect with others, share the cancer experience, and find comfort and solace. And it's an opportunity to build hope for a future where cancer no longer threatens the lives of the people we love. As volunteers and donors, your efforts support research, education, advocacy, and services that allow the American Cancer Society to offer help and hope to people across the country when they need it most. By joining together at Relay, we celebrate life, friendship, and an opportunity to work to defeat cancer for future generations. Sign up today to become a part of the Relay For Life® effort in your community, and you too can fight back against cancer. Relay For Life

Date: May 1, 2010

Time:10:00am; Pleasant Valley High School

Contact Info: --

Relay For Life is a life-changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people- to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer; remember loved ones lost to the disease; and fight back against a disease that takes too much. Won't you join us? Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are 24 hours in length; representing the reality that cancer never sleeps. By participating, you honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives we've lost to the disease, and raise money to help fight cancer in your community. Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease.
